The United States Navy has confirmed that an unmanned drone aircraft crashed on Monday near the state’s Eastern Shore on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Patuxent River Naval Air Station’s Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons tells the Associated Press that a 44-foot drone was engaged in a routine maintenance flight when it crashed near Bloodsworth Island, MD in the Chesapeake Bay around 100 miles outside of Washington, DC.

No military sources have yet to comment as to why a drone aircraft was being used in the region.

The US Coast Guard has confirmed that they are in establishing a safety zone in the area to investigate the crash.
