Hillary Clinton to speak at UCLA Wednesday after comparing Russian President Vladimir Putin to Hitler
A day after comparing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent actions in the Ukraine to Adolf Hitler’s in the late 1930s, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will deliver the keynote address Wednesday at the UCLA College of Letters and Science’s Luskin Lecture for Thought Leadership.
Clinton, who has yet to announce whether she will run for U.S. president in 2016, will participate in a question-and-answer session with UCLA political-science professor Lynn Vayreck after her speech.
At a private event Tuesday, the former Secretary of State said Putin’s desire to supposedly protect minority Russians in Ukraine is reminiscent of Hitler’s actions to supposedly protect ethnic Germans outside Germany. She said the Russian leader has been on a campaign to give Russian passports to anyone with Russian connections.
Putin has recently done so in the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which, Clinton said, is similar to what happened in Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. Hitler resettled tens of thousands of ethnic Germans who had been living in parts of Europe to Nazi Germany.
“Now if this sounds familiar, it’s what Hitler did back in the ’30s,” she said. “All the Germans that were … the ethnic Germans, the Germans by ancestry who were in places like Czechoslovakia and Romania and other places, Hitler kept saying they’re not being treated right. I must go and protect my people, and that’s what’s gotten everybody so nervous.”
Putin last week put Russian troops in Crimea, insisting Russia has a right to protect its interests and Russian speakers there and elsewhere in Ukraine. The move came on the heels of a new government coming to power last week in Ukraine after months of pro-democracy protests against now-fugitive President Viktor Yanukovych and his decision to turn Ukraine toward Russia instead of the European Union.
Clinton made her comments at a private event benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.
